Depression
Target Group
Professional helpers who have direct, and ongoing contact with clients who have a serious affective disorder. It is anticipated that participants will already have undertaken generic mental health training. The course will be adapted to reflect the experience, work roles and settings of the participants.Duration
Two consecutive days.Training Style
The training has a “fringe theatre” feel brought about by the trainer’s use of theatrical devices to bring the case material to life. This is backed up with lectures, structured exercises, opportunities to practice skills and group discussion.Aim
This is a practice-based course aimed at helping participants to work more effectively and appropriately with people who suffer various levels of depressionContent
- The range of affective disorders; typical onset, development, prognosis and treatments
- Exploration of personal reactions and dilemmas in working with depressed clients
- Finding ways to effectively engage clients who may be withdrawn and difficult to motivate
- Developing strategies with clients to overcome their depression
- Practicing skills in cognitive restructuring
- Working with relatives to enlist their support in the treatment programme
