Trauma
Target Group
Counsellors, mental health professionals, staff welfare officers. Participants need to be experienced counsellors, qualified to diploma (or equivalent) standard, and to be working with trauma clients. This is not an introductory course.Duration
Two 4-day training modules, and one 5-day professional development module, spaced over 7 months. Between and following the modules, participants will be required to compile a portfolio of their trauma counselling practice. This can be submitted for assessment at any time in the following two years.Training Style
Participants are taken through each stage of a trauma counselling model in detail. At each stage, skills and methods are introduced, explored, demonstrated, and then practiced. Using video and audio taping, the trainers and assessors are able to give continuous feedback to participants. Group supervision facilitates reflection and integration of learning throughout the process. On the professional development module have an opportunity to broaden their awareness of chosen specialist areas, present aspects of their practice, and attend an assessment interview.Trainers
Dr Iain Bourne and Ms Billie Oliver are the trainers and assessors. Peter Allen is the internal verifier for the Award Centre, and the OCR appoint an external verifier for the award.Aim
This course aims to train, assess and accredit counsellors as having demonstrated their competence to work skilfully, appropriately, and ethically with adolescents and adults whose lives have been significantly and adversely affected by a traumatic event.Content
